BIRD WATCHING

Panama is almost literally the bridge between North and South America and therefore home to a huge number of animals and plants. Over 900 species of birds have been recorded in Panama, of which 11 are endemic to Panama and a further 63 are only found in Panama and Costa Rica. Six of the Panamanian endemics (Brown-backed Dove, Veraguan Mango, Azuero Painted Parakeet, Coiba Spinetail, Yellow-green Finch and the Glow-throated Hummingbird occur within 150 km from Hotel Heliconia in Palmilla.

We organise bird-watching trips to Cerro Hoya, Coiba, Montuoso and Santa Fé. Prices depend on the number of bird watchers and the area you want to visit. Please contact us for more information.

To get an idea of the birds you might see, visit our image gallery and check the list.

CERRO HOYA BIRD WATCHING TOUR

The National Park Cerro Hoya, just 50 km down the road from us, is home to three of the endemics: Brown-backed Dove (Leptoptila battyi) Azuero Parakeet (Pyrrhura eisenmanni), Veraguan Mango (Anthracothorax veraguensis), but also to other rare birds like the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus), Black-and-White Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus melanoleucus) and the orange-collared Manakin (Manacus aurantiacus), the King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) and a host of other bird species.

The best time to visit the Cerro Hoya NP is from January to July. The Great Green Macaws and the Black-and-White Hawk-Eagle nest from January to March; the Azuero Prakeet is usually seen from late April to early July. Cerro Hoya has almost no infrastructure, but we work with a guide who knows the park very well and is very good at finding birds (and other wildlife). We organise a trip to Cerro Hoya in search of the Azuero Parakeet, the Brown-backed Dove and many others birds.

TANAGER GARDENS TOUR

Birding in our 8 hectare reforestation property is also rewarding, we have registered over 125 bird species so far and we expect many more bird species as the forest grows mature. We have built a hide and have placed bird feeders at several locations in the grounds. During the dry season, our hummingbird feeders are visited by six species of hummingbirds. The hide and the feeders provide ample opportunity to photograph birds up close.
